New study highlights the success of NL Active’s Good Boost sessions
Comments Off on New study highlights the success of NL Active’s Good Boost sessionsDelivered in all North Lincolnshire Council swimming pools, Good Boost is an innovative, water-based exercise programme for people with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions that uses poolside tablets to provide personalised workouts tailored to each participant’s individual needs.
A recent national study involving more than 4,400 participants has highlighted the positive impact of Good Boost’s digital exercise programmes. The findings show that the programme is helping adults with joint and muscle conditions to move more easily, improve their overall wellbeing and reduce anxiety, while also helping to ease pressure on NHS physiotherapy services.
What the study found
The study analysed more than 40,000 exercise sessions nationally and found that:
- After six weeks, participants experienced meaningful improvements in mobility, happiness and anxiety
- At 12- and 26-week follow-ups, more than one-third reported reduced pain, while around 47% achieved clinically significant improvements in physical function
- Over 65% of participants reported an overall positive improvement in their condition
- Results were comparable to traditional physiotherapy, demonstrating that Good Boost can effectively support people while helping to reduce demand on NHS services
In North Lincolnshire, the Good Boost programme is available in every council-run swimming pool, ensuring residents can access tailored, therapeutic exercise in a supportive and familiar environment. By combining technology with expert-designed exercise, Good Boost makes it easier for people to take control of their health.
One participant who has been attending regular sessions at Baysgarth Community Hub explained the positive impact they have been having:
“The Good Boost classes have really, really changed my life for the better. My condition means that on a good day I could only walk for ten minutes a day using my sticks, and some days I couldn’t walk at all. So my life had become smaller and smaller, until fate intervened and someone told me about these sessions. From the first session, the staff have been an absolute joy, all welcoming and very kind.
“I used to swim well, and I’ve always loved the water. To be able to stand upright and move my body in the water is almost euphoric. With the support of my Health & Wellbeing Activator, now on days I don’t swim I’m going to maybe try something in the gym too.”
Ben Wilkins, CEO of Good Boost, said:
“The study demonstrated that improvements individuals are achieving through our digital exercise programmes are very similar to outcomes from face-to-face physiotherapy.
“The evidence shows that our programmes are not only safe and accessible, but also a valuable tool in managing long-term joint and muscle conditions. Importantly, they are scalable and have real potential to help ease pressure on NHS services.”
